Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. It is not a weight reduction procedure as commonly misunderstood. It is a form of surgery that helps to achieve a well balanced and proportionate body shape by permanently removing fat cells from designated areas marked preoperatively. It is usually offered to patients with near normal body weight who have been through a regular diet and exercise program to take care of stubborn fat and to correct contour deformities. It may also be combined with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), body lift, face lift to improve contouring and give more shape.
A small incision is made at a distance from the area that needs to be tackled. A narrow cannula (tube) is then inserted and connected to a vacuum pump. The suction cannula is then manouvered in a way to break up and suck unwanted fat .After suction the incision is stitched and dressed. Pressure garments are usually prescribed to be worn after surgery. The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthetic.
Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common but temporary and improve with time and prescribed drugs.
