Reconstructive Surgery
Reconstructive surgery aims at restoring the normal. It deals with correction of deformities caused by birth defects, developmental anomalies, trauma, cancer or other disease processes.
Common birth defects amenable to treatment include cleft lip and palate, webbed fingers & toes, external ear anomalies, birth marks (as nevus, pigmentation), vascular lesions, hypospadias (abnormal position of urinary opening) etc..
Acquired deformities include lacerations, post traumatic defects and disfigurement, post cancer (tumor) resection defects, facial fractures, burns and post burn deformities etc.
Besides this the plastic surgeon also offers various treatment modalities for wound management as well.
Reconstructive surgery frequently demands complex planning and may require a number of procedures done in stages.
Scarring is an inevitable result of reconstructive procedure but with careful planning they can always be minimized or hidden.
Although no amount of surgery can achieve "perfection," modern treatment options allow plastic surgeons to achieve improvements in form and function thought to be impossible some years back.
